Give Me New Genres!

We need more creative genres at SDSU! I’m tired of the same pop rock bands copied and pasted across every poster playing. There are some really creative minds here and we deserve to hear what they got. I think that if we can create a wider, more diverse cast of genres, more people would be inclined to interact with music. Think of it as a snowball effect, new musicians perform, inspiring other musicians to write their own stuff, growing a brand new genre of music to see live; something that's never before graced the presence of SDSU students.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the bands and the music that’s played at local shows, but we gotta add more unique types of music to the roster. For example, we have no hardcore scene, with no outlet for possible hardcore bands to perform. SDSU concert-goers need to give these people a platform to make the art that they best express. If we cannot achieve that, the current music scene will stay the same indefinitely.

If musicians were able to express their interests through the music they make and share it live, more people would be willing to see shows. The current scene has been curated and refined to the simplest genres, and they gather the same groups of people to attend the same shows. A larger landscape of genre is bound to draw individuals from every corner of every niche. Bringing out a plethora of shows with a mix of genres to choose from on a Friday night would create an entirely new atmosphere in the realm of live on-campus music.

The truth is that people are drawn to what others are passionate about. In spreading new music with unique genres, others will be exposed to genres they never even knew existed!

Give me metal; from grindcore to metalcore. Give me shoegaze; from Whirr covers to the most ambient guitars we got. Let’s try some genres at SDSU!
